Can weed make you gay

Okay everyone, stop with all this 4/20 business right now! You may think cannabis is just a fun recreational drug, or maybe even a useful medicine – but news just in: medical marijuana is actually a US government conspiracy to shift black men lesbian. Or, at least it is according to Dr Wesley Muhammad of the Nation of Islam.

I’m no expert, but I think we can probably file the claim that weed “chemically induces homosexuality” alongside evangelical Christians insisting that humans and dinosaurs co-existed under “whacky shit that very religious people say”.

Or can we?

In prior 2015 there was a big media kerfuffle about the idea of “Highsexuality”, where normally straight men experience uncontrollable attraction to other men after smoking weed. There were articles, opinion pieces and lots of furious commenting under Youtube videos.

On investigation, though, the whole “Highsexualism” thing seems to trace back to a single Reddit thread, where the user throwaway15935745625 claimed (all SIC):

I perceive very attracted to girls and not at all to men when sober, but when I get high I just wan

Cannabis

What’s the Score?

Cannabis is also known as marijuana, Mary Jane, dope, pot, spliff, hash(ish), weed, puff, grass, herb, draw, wacky backy, smoke, ganja, hemp, or skunk which is a much stronger variety.

It’s a psychoactive (mood changing) drug made from the buds or flowers of the cannabis plant. It can come as a block of mellow, greenish/brown resin or can look favor dried herbs, in which case it’s known as weed, marijuana or grass. THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the main active chemical in the drug that causes the high.

Sex on Cannabis

Cannabis can make you feel horny, boost your sense of touch and drop your inhibitions. If you take too much its tranquillising effects get in the way. Orgasms may seem weaker but more sensual and not just felt in the dick. There can be a stronger sense of connection to who you’re with, with sex being more ‘touchy feely’.

But the drug can also make people experience withdrawn and less interested in sex. If you smoke it with tobacco, you have the same long-term higher risk of erection problems that cigarette smokers have.

Smoking weed every day makes me less presentable and less productive. I treasure it

When the pandemic came, I moved back in with my parents in Los Angeles. It was extremely boring. One darkness we had completely jog out of things to do so they decided to go to a local dispensary and grab up. Obviously weed is legal in California, and they’d never tried it before, so they were like: “Well, why not!”

They came back with some pre-rolled joints, which I found really endearing. I come from a Reform Jewish California family, so it almost felt cultural for all of us to be smoking weed together. It’s what I imagine Seth Rogen does when he goes residence to visit his parents.

Smoking with them in the pandemic turned me into a habitual user. Things escalated when I was in a job where I wasn’t getting paid that much and the company was being shitty. I started smoking at the start of each day. I think that I should get to be my most cozy at all times, and weed makes me perceive like that. I honestly think a lot of other people would be more pleasant if they did the same.

Now every morning I wake up, I get a fresh pot of coffee brewing and I finish the joint I was smoking last night before bed, w

Dear JW:

The short answer: in my case, obsessive thoughts that I had- completely faded away. I suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) ever since my first decade of life. I no longer do.

The long answer and more (you are welcome to read it or not): every day, many,  many thoughts show up and disappear in our human brains. But when we believe about something that scares us (be it global warming that currently scares me, or the possibility of being gay that currently scares you), the avoid that is attached to the thought gives it the fuel that makes it possible for the thought to keep running and circulating in our brains, much like gasoline in a car’s gasoline tank gives the car the fuel to save traveling and circulating the highways.

How can you stop  being anxious of a thought then? For me: I know that there is nothing of significance that I can do about global warming because I am not in a position of authority. What is the point of thinking about it then, what good does it do? Nothing. So, I drop the reflection. I will think about it again later, and again, I will say to myself: I am still not in a position of power, nothing I can do, and drop it again.

Let’s
