‘BURLY’ MAN – CANNAVALE STEALS THE SHOW IN ‘HURLYBURLY’
He’s played it homosexual, straight and somewhere in between. But nowhere before has Bobby Cannavale played a role as naked as the one in “Hurlyburly.”
True, unlike co-stars Ethan Hawke and Parker Posey, he doesn’t present much skin, but as Phil – the ex-con turned actor in David Rabe’s 1984 act about four guys adrift in Hollywood – Cannavale is a volcano of raw emotion, same parts brute and broken heart.
“Sure, he’s got his problems,” Cannavale says of Phil, who at one point flings a woman from a moving car.
“But Phil’s got the biggest heart of anyone on that stage. He’s trying to locate a way to connect, and he tries every way you can …
“He’s really a soulful, out-there, open guy.”
