8 Athletes Rumored To Swing Both Ways And 7 Rumored To Be In The Closet
In today's society more people are more easy coming out of as LGBT than 20 or 30 years ago. It goes the alike for athletes many athletes have arrive out in recent years. For example when Michael Sam came out before the NFL Draft he was criticized because some teams didn't want the media distraction signing him would provide. At least that's the reason they said. He was selected by the St. Louis Rams but he was cut before the regular season. After a short stint on Dallas's apply squad, he went to the CFL, only playing in oner game. While sports have reach a long way in accepting those of different backgrounds and sexualities, there's still a lot of work to be done.
They're are athletes today who still remain in the closet and won't come out because of the scrutiny they could face. Athletes in team sports are further discouraged, because some teams view an athlete coming out as a media distraction. With roughly 10% of the population identifying as LGBT, there are many rumors floating around that many of these athletes fall in that spectrum, but hold chosen to hold it hidden. Here are eight athletes ru

Gossip about Dwight Howard’s sexuality detracts from the weight of assault claims
Since Jason Collins became the first openly gay active male athlete in a major US sports league in 2013, the public attitudes toward LGBTQ+ athletes include shifted significantly. We’ve lived through Obergefell v Hodges, the legalization of queer marriage, and a constant drumbeat of ‘firsts’ including Michael Sam, Collin Martin, Carl Nassib and Luke Prokop. But one thing hasn’t changed: how the NBA, its players and fans react when socially constructed ideas of masculinity, sexuality and sports are questioned.
When Collins came out, he was met mostly with applause, including assist from Kobe Bryant and the Obamas. The circumstances around another NBA celestial body, Dwight Howard, are very different. While Collins was never more than a role player during his NBA career, Howard is a future Hall of Famer once put forth as a face of the league: a three-time defensive player of the year, an eight-time All-Star and an NBA champion with the LA Lakers in 2020. (The 37-year-old most recently played in the Taiwanese league.)
But Howard has received none of the praise that Collins did. The reason is fairly obvious.
Which WNBA players are gay and how many of them are gay? Well, when Autostraddle published our very first list of out gay WNBA players several years back, it held merely 15 names. Last season, that number had climbed to 38, although two of the players on last year’s list ended up getting waived from their teams shortly into the season, leaving us with 36. But this year, despite losing a lot of last year’s roster, we continue to win with even more gay players, coming in at 44 so far this year.
