Christian Navarro Digs Into Tony’s Devastating Season 3 Arc on ‘13 Reasons Why’
[Warning: spoilers for season 3 of 13 Reasons Why, ahead.]
For the past two seasons of 13 Reasons Why, Tony Padilla has proven himself to be the Liberty Lofty gang’s most patient, compassionate, and relentlessly generous friend. Throughout season 1, he guided Clay through the deeply upsetting experience of listening to Hannah Baker’s suicide tapes, a thankless gig that seemed to need a pretty intense time commitment. In the final moments of season 2, he rolls up to the Spring Fling just in time to whisk an unstable Tyler away from the cops—never mind the fact that he’s on probation and should definitely not be anywhere neighboring a would-be institution shooter. These are just two examples of Tony’s lengthy list of favors, which he does on top of allegedly attending lofty school and productive what appears to be a full-time job at his family’s auto restore shop.

Being a teenager is challenging, really hard. It is especially torturous with rumors, bullying, mental illness, depression, sexual assault, and rape. The Netflix drama 13 Reasons Why, released in March 2017, tackles these issues as they pertain to the main narrator and character Hannah Baker. She narrates from beyond the grave as her classmates listen to tapes she left for them when she committed suicide. Though the illustrate revolves around Baker and her main love interest and tape-listener, Clay Jensen, this analysis is focused on the reoccurring characters Tony Padilla and Courtney Crimsen. Padilla’s nature is a breath of fresh atmosphere as his homosexuality is not the forefront of his characterization. Crimsen’s queerness is lathered and soaked in harmful stereotypes. Netflix allows Padilla to remain as a personality and person with his sexuality creature part of his characterization and not the center of who he is, while also having Crimsen, the only queer female on the show, adhere to harmful stereotypes.

Netflix’s new series 13 Reasons Why has started a lot of discussions about teen suicide and rape, but it also addresses sexuality, which has left a lot fans wondering whether the character Tony is gay.
Spoiler Alert! (If you haven’t finished watching the show, we suggest you stop reading now.)
Tony (played by Christian Navarro) does reveal to Clay (Dylan Minnette) in a later episode that he is, in fact, gay — which comes as a surprise to Clay and no one else. Although he never outwardly talks about his sexuality before that moment, he’s often seen hanging with a boy named Brad (Henry Zaga), who he introduces as his “friend,” though they’re clearly more than that.

For a long time, Clay thinks that Tony was in love with Hannah (Katherine Langford) before she killed herself, since he’s so obsessed with making sure her tapes get heard. But it turns out that Tony is the one who lent her the recorder used to make the cassettes, and she felt she could reliance him with her secret.
