Gay Chinese man wins legal battle over forced conversion therapy
A gay man in central China has won an apology and compensation from a mental hospital over forced conversion therapy, reports say.
The man, identified only by his surname Yu, had been admitted by his wife and relatives to the hospital in the town of Zhumadian in Henan province in 2015.
He was forced to take medicine and have injections over 19 days.
But the court establish that forcing him into a mental institution if he did not pose a danger infringed his rights.
Last month it ordered the hospital - which had diagnosed Mr Yu with "sexual preference disorder" - to publish a public apology in local newspapers and pay the 38-year-old $735 (£570), AP said citing a imitate of the judgement.
However the court did not show an opinion on the practice of gay conversion therapy.
Homosexuality was considered to be a mental disorder in China until 2001, and attitudes remain conservative.
In 2014 gay rights activist Peng Yanhui went into a private conversion therapy clinic in Beijing to investigate the electroshock treatments it was advertising.
He later sued the hospital over the suffering

The war is over and Stonewall has changed the same-sex attracted community forever, but most gay Iowans are still living in the closet. Cruising and elicit hookups are the only ways Diverse people can face – and individual bookstores and homosexual bars are the only places they feel safe organism themselves. But a gruesome murder threatens to change all that.

Armand Goldman (Robin Williams) is a gay Jewish man who owns a nightclub in Miami’s South Beach neighborhood – “The Birdcage” – a venue that has a well-known reputation for its drag shows. In fact, Armand’s partner Albert (Nathan Lane) is the main attraction, performing under the name “Starina.” When Armand’s son Val, a product of a one-night stand with a woman, shows up and explains that he intends to join a right-wing senator’s daughter, Armand and Albert are compelled to “go into the closet” and pretend to be straight men so that Val can launch them to the girl’s parents. Things get sticky when a political scandal breaks out involving a colleague of the conservative senator who dies in the arms of a black prostitute, and the real identity of Armand, Albert, and their nightclub is in danger of coming to light.
