Denzel Washington says his gay kiss in 'Gladiator II' was cut, thinks filmmakers 'got chicken'

“Gladiator II” is set to release next week, bringing audiences the glory and gore of the Roman Empire: Swords will be unsheathed in this blockbuster sequel and heroes will rise — and perhaps share a kiss?

Actor Denzel Washington told Gayety that he had a kiss in the movie but that it was ultimately cut from the final print.

“I actually kissed the bloke in the movie, but they took it, they slash it. I contemplate they got chicken,” Washington, who plays a Roman businessman in the motion picture, said in a video interview. “I kissed a guy full on the lips, and I guess they weren’t ready for that yet.”

“I killed him about five minutes later,” he added with a chuckle. “It’s ‘Gladiator.’ It’s the kiss of death.”

It appears that it wasn’t the only kiss that was cut from the Ridley Scott-directed film. 

Actor Paul Mescal told Entertainment Weekly about a moment with co-star Pedro Pascal: “There was a moment when we were rehearsing my fight scene with Pedro, and I had an idea towards the end of the scene to smooch Pedro on the forehead.”

To that end, it's confirmed both off-screen and on that Gladiator II's Macrinus is more than likely bisexual in the new sequel.

Denzel Washington revealed in a video interview with Gayety that he kissed a man on the lips while filming “Gladiator II,” but the scene was cut out from the theatrical cut of the long-awaited sequel. The Oscar winner stars in Ridley Scott’s film as Macrinus, a wealthy powerbroker in Rome who keeps a stable of gladiators for sport.

The “Gladiator II” script mentions that Macrinus has been in relationships with other men in the past, which prompted Gaytey to ask Washington: “How gay is the Roman empire?”

“I actually kissed a male in the film but they took it out, they cut it, I think they got chicken,” Washington then revealed. “I kissed a guy packed on the lips and I guess they weren’t ready for that yet. I killed him about five minutes later. It’s ‘Gladiator.’ It’s the brush of death.”
