Despite anime having a much higher number of queer characters on screen as compared to Western TV series and Hollywood films, those characters have often been relegated to being embodiments of negative stereotypes of their community, or are meant simply as the punch line for homophobic jokes.

However, there have also been LGBTQ+ figures that were portrayed as actual characters, whose entire being did not revolve around their sexuality. Sadly, time wasn’t kind to most of these characters, seeing how most of them flew under the radar or have been forgotten as the years went on.

Although 2022, in some regards, more than lived up to this possibility and went beyond, there were challenges.

In the world of anime, some series with implied, or directly represented, LGBTQ characters, ended. [1] Often times these series had yuri themes. For instance, there were somewhat strong undertones between the protagonist, Komichi Akebi, and her friend, Erika Kizaki, in Akebi’s Sailor Uniform, and the protagonists of The Demon Girl Next Door, Yuko Yoshida and Momo Chiyoda, and those of the short-lived, but intriguing, yuri isekai, The Executioner and Her Way of Life. Since anime encompasses all of Japanese animation, there's a large span of genres and thousands of alternative character types. That means there are subsections of anime dedicated to telling LGBTQ stories and prominently featuring queer characters. But even in other genres, where you might not expect to see as much representation, like shonen, there are still quite a few examples.

Anime doesn’t often tread is in the direction of homosexual characters, but several anime and manga creators have managed to slip gay and queer coded characters into their media anyways. Here are some of my personal favorites!

Japanese animated media is often known as a prime example of representation gone wrong. From stereotyped portrayals of people of color to blatant disrespect and sexualization of women, anime doesn't always hit the notice when it comes to creating practical and respectful characters who aren’t men. One place anime doesn’t often tread is in the direction of lgbtq+ characters. However, several anime and manga creators have managed to slip lgbtq+ and queer coded characters into their media. Here are some of my personal favorites!

1. Najimi, Komi Can’t Express (Komi-san wa, Kyomushou Desu) (2021)

Najimi is a canonically non-binary/gender fluid character in the 2021 feel-good show “Komi Can’t Communicate.” Najimi serves as the extroverted best friend of both Tadano and Komi, the two main characters of the show. Their defining characteristic is their bubbly ego and exhaustive list of friends. Serving as a foil to Komi, who has severe social an
