Portsmouth Guerrilla Gay Prevent builds community
Just a few patrons recline at the lock at The Rosa Restaurant in Portsmouth. It's Oct. 21 — the third Friday of the month, 8:30 p.m. and fairly still, maybe even hour for folks to start thinking about going home. Ah, how quickly things can change in a Portsmouth block on the third Friday of the month.
By 9:30 p.m., the bar is packed with about 60 men, four women and the few who remained at the block from the commencement of the evening. The Rosa, for just this one night, has transformed into Portsmouth Guerrilla Gay Bar.
Paul Carragher is the organizer of the impromptu group along with Glen Flowers and Peter Monte. The group started in April 2010, but has since gathered steam via social media and pos of mouth. Its Facebook page, which is invitee only, now has 125 members and about 60 — almost all gay men — have been showing up at the "Pop-up" gatherings held at places like The Hilton Garden Inn, 2 Ceres Street and Rudi's.
