“It’s about life and death and love,” she explains. “And that’s it.” For the 41-year-old Clark, at least two of those topics are intrinsically linked to her own self as a gay artist. “Every tape I’ve ever made has been so personal about what’s going on in my life at any given period. I’m queer. I know how to code-switch. The concept of identity as performance has been very clear to me since I was a child.” Even so, Clark shuts down the suggestion that she adopted a mask or performative persona for the album: “I’m queer, I’m living in multitudes, but this document in particular is not about persona or deconstruction.”
Code-switching — changing one’s conduct to suit an uncomfortable environment — is nothing novel for LGBTQ+ people. Even in the generally progressive-minded harmony community, Clark says the world gay musicians currently inhabit is “very different” than when she kicked off her recording career in 2006 with the three-song EP Paris Is Burning. “Which is one of those things which gives me a lot of hope,” she notes. “I kn

Types of criminalisation
- Criminalises LGBT people
- Criminalises sexual activity between males
- Criminalises sexual activity between females
Summary
Same-sex sexual action is prohibited under the Criminal Code 1988, which criminalises acts of ‘buggery’ and ‘gross indecency’. These provisions lug a maximum penalty of ten years’ imprisonment. Both men and women are criminalised under the law.

Nevertheless, the mere being alive of this provision is itself a violation of human rights and underpins further acts of discrimination (see further). There have been some reports of discrimination and force being committed against LGBT people in recen

Her theatrical songs veer sharply from the sweet to the satirically dark, and her vast army of fans is so devoted they’ve been known to experiment and steal her shoes as she plays.
After ten years of continual touring, three hypnotic and cinematic albums, and a brand new collaboration with David Byrne released in September, could this be the moment when St. Vincent crosses the line from cult idolisation to mainstream glory?
Annie Clark and I are taking a Sunday stroll around her neighbourhood in Manhattan’s East Village. We’re both from the suburbs – Dallas, Texas in her case; Birmingham, England in mine – and as we watch some clumsy teenage skateboarders in a playground on East 12th Street, we wonder what it would have been like to be them, growing up in a cultural capital like Modern York or London instead of spending our adolescence in our bedrooms, dreaming of those places. “I knew I had to get out,” says Annie. “Not that Dallas w
