One of our wonderful character actors, John Turturro, is equally adept at at drama, comedy and tough-guy roles. A New York stage veteran, he made his way to Hollywood following a character actor's way, but thanks to several influential mentors (Spike Lee and the Coen Brothers, in particular), his career soared as he appeared in film after movie that would demonstrate to become classics.

Although he continues to have a flourishing career in television -- he is an Emmy winner from two nominations and has earned a Golden Globe nod and three Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his TV serve -- I suspect that it will be for his work in production for which he will be most remembered, from minute indelible roles in "Do the Right Thing" and "The Big Lebowski" to great leading parts, such as in the Coens' "Barton Fink," and "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

    A Damn Fine Cup of Culture

    I was hypnotized by The Darkness Of for five or six episodes, which isn’t bad at all considering that it’s an eight-part HBO miniseries. To me, it seemed to scratch the itch that season 2 of True Detective left me with. It’s on the dark side of things: it mostly takes place at night and/or indoors, but even the exterior daylight scenes look sort of gloomy. It’s about crime and punishment, and about the law, about justice and injustice, and about courts and prison.
