Gravity Falls: Dipper & Wendy Were Both Queer-Coded
Disney's Gravity Falls presented a cosmos seemingly filled with queer characters, even though few were explicitly labeled as such. It was no surprise that fans began to read some of the Gravity Falls characters as Homosexual. Even 10 years after the Disney series aired, the topic is still discussed. As newer and more openly queer cartoons gas, such as The Owl House, fans are even more eager to dive into what could've been in Gravity Falls.
Two of the most heavily queer-coded characters were Dipper and Wendy. Regular viewers questioned if Dipper was trans person, due to a multitude of factors seen throughout the show. Gravity Falls also portrayed Wendy in a fashion that had many fans wondering whether she was heterosexual. As main characters, their status as members of the LGBTQ+ community would mark a significant step for voice in animated television — especially for Disney.

Queer-coded characters, while not openly or canonical Alex Hirsch, the designer of the children’s supernatural series Gravity Falls, recently spoke out about how he was prevented from including LGBT+ characters in his story during his time at Disney. Though Disney has publicly stated that they are in favor of including LGBT+ representation, there have been very few openly queer or trans characters in any of Disney’s recent works. The few same-sex attracted characters that are represented, such as LeFou in 2017’s Beauty and the Beast, often hold very little screen time dedicated to accurately serving their identities. Hirsch’s comments on Disney’s LGBT+ voice came not drawn-out after the discharge of a headline-making episode of Disney’s Owl House. This episode, titled “Grom,” confirmed that one female character, Amity, has a affection on the female protagonist Luz. The story was commended on social media for its logical depiction of LGBT+ kids, something that has been absent from many other Disney Channel shows.
