People are taking GHB in clubs. Experts say we're not paying enough attention.
In the club or at a party, GHB makes its entrance. It arrives in a small vial – maybe paired with a dropper – and is poured into a drink. Something sweet like lemonade. Or even water.
"G" is popular enough among some on the party scene to be acknowledged by just its first initial. It has been favored in club settings, particularly at same-sex attracted clubs. Users utter they feel euphoric, promiscuous and confident. But it can also cause nausea, dizziness, blurred vision and elevated body temperatures. Historically, G was known as a date rape drug and as a drug that was almost exclusively taken by queer men and those in the chemsex scene. Getting solid stats on the G-using demographic is currently impossible – it doesn’t appear in the latest official government drug stats nor the Global Drugs Survey. But drug experts and people in the scene say that G usage is now spreading to non-LGBTQ clubs, parties and music festivals.
“For a long moment it was a drug that specifically cis-gendered gay men used,” says Berlin-based drag queen Pansy, who runs a harm reduction service called Let’s Converse About Sex and Drugs. “That has definitely

What Does LGBTQIA+ Mean?
For many years, the umbrella term “gay” was used to describe the community.
Now, many people worry about how to come out, but coming out before the 1970s wasn’t even an option, as many states illegalized what they called “homosexuality” or “sodomy.” There was also no acronym at all, restricting the inclusivity of our community.
